In the desolate, plague-scarred American West of 1849, a recently freed woman named Sarah carries a secret fear: her young daughter appears supernatural, for everything the child touches dies. Desperate, Sarah convinces Dr. Bender, a widowed physician whose faith in both God and science has been shattered, to escort them across the harsh frontier in search of a distant faith-healer who might save the girl. Along their perilous journey they encounter brutal terrain, suspicious townsfolk, and strange figures whose motives are unclear. Bender, trained to diagnose disease, battles his skepticism as he witnesses inexplicable events; Sarah battles her anguish and protective love as she clings to hope for her daughter’s redemption. The further they travel, the more the boundary between illness and possession, science and belief, begins to blur. Ultimately the journey becomes a haunting meditation on faith, fear and the lengths one will go to protect a child believed to be cursed.
