Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Production Paused For Week Due To Tom Holland Concussion; Filming To Resume Monday

Sources tell Deadline that the Sony/Marvel Studios’ movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day will pause production for a week after Tom Holland suffered a mild concussion on a London set Friday. They can’t film around him. The actor is recuperating, and filming is set to resume September 29.

Holland was taken to the hospital where he was examined, but not admitted, after suffering the concussion reportedly during a stunt gone wrong, which occurred on the Pinewood Studios set of the film. No other crew members or cast were injured during the stunt.

Note, the accident didn’t occur on the film’s Glasgow, Scotland set as Brand New Day production has been at Pinewood outside London for most of September, we’re told.

The sequel is being directed by Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton. Producers are Amy Pascal and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige returning. Zendaya will reprise her role as MJ, with Sadie Sink and Liza Colón-Zayas also joining the cast in undisclosed roles. Mark Ruffalo is also expected to reprise his Marvel Cinematic Universe role as The Hulk.

The Holland-starring Spider-Man movies have been a rich franchise for Sony, which it has co-produced with Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, grossing $3.93 billion worldwide through three movies since 2017. Because Sony owns the Marvel Spider-Man universe part of the comic book franchise, Holland’s Spider-Man has been able to be used in Disney MCU titles, and the latter characters have been able to appear in Sony’s Spider-Man movies (i.e., Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, etc).

The last live-action Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, is Sony’s highest-grossing movie ever at $2.05 billion. The movie opened during the latter part of Covid in December 2021 as theaters were reopening. It brought the masses back, opening to $260.1 million domestic, the second best cume ever, and $600.5M global, the third best worldwide debut ever.
